Established in 1766,
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is
America's eighth oldest institution of higher learning
and one of the nation's premier public research
universities. Rutgers' Cook College and the New
Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) are
the primary units at Rutgers responsible for carrying
out the university's land-grant mission and functions. |

Cook College, located in
New Brunswick, is a professional school with its own
faculty, students, and housing. It is one of the
nation's leading colleges for scholarly research and
undergraduate education in areas related to food,
agriculture, natural resources, and the environment. |

NJAES is mandated by the
state to address the needs of its residents as they
relate to agriculture, natural resources, and human and
community development. Although they are technically
separate institutions, Cook and NJAES are part of a
national land-grant system of colleges and universities
that, by virtue of the 1862 Morrill Act, have a mission
to serve residents, businesses, and communities through
teaching, research and extension.
Headquartered at Cook
College, NJAES has outlying stations throughout New
Jersey and is the largest research unit of Rutgers. It
is also the home of Rutgers Cooperative Research &
Extension (RCRE). Through RCRE, the NJAES performs
state-mandated research and outreach functions that
generate and deliver practical, science-based solutions
for the viability, health, and sustainability of
industries and communities related to agriculture, the
environment, natural resources, food, and human and
community development. Both the college and experiment
station focus their activities on the challenges
pertaining to the rural-suburban-urban interface in New
Jersey.
